Ocotillo Times

January 22, 2013  |  blog

The ocotillo plants are a lot greener here than in Anza Borrego.

Apparently it was really cold here when it was cold in Borrego, but since we’ve been here it’s been glorious. High 50′s, low 60′s at night and mid to high seventies during the day. Our little weather widget on the side of the blog hasn’t been very accurate and neither has the weather on wunderground.com which powers it. So I’ll probably have to remove it or find one powered by weather.com.

Dinner Last Night:
Creamy Wild Rice & Mushroom Soup. I messed up a little reading the recipe. During the step where you’re supposed to stir constantly, I ran back to the computer to see what came next and skipped a line. So I added the broth when I was supposed to add the wine and thyme which should have had the opportunity to cook off some. So I added 1/4 cup of wine instead of a third and because my spice jars look the same, when I added the thyme it turned out I added more pepper! So I had to skim some of the pepper off of the surface. It still turned out great, just not exactly as it was supposed to.

  1. Love the soup story. Sounds just like something I would do. My spice tins all look the same and I only have these tiny labels on the bottom- very easy to mix them up. Glad it turned out oaky in the end!

  2. Ocotillo . . . is this also known as “Plaster City?”

    • Plaster City is located about 15 miles west of El Centro, CA – we are about 50 miles east of El Centro on the CA/AZ border near Yuma.

  3. I always thought wine was for the cook!

Enjoying your travels, and the tales of it!
