The other reason we drove out to Anza-Borrego Desert on Saturday was to see our friends Bert and Janie. Bert and Janie have been boondocking (free dispersed camping) in Borrego Springs since right after Thanksgiving. Our trip was spontaneous, so we didn’t give them any advance notice and we also didn’t know exactly where they were camping. All we knew was they referred to themselves as “Pegleggers.” With that clue we found them where Pegleg Road meets Borrego Salton Seaway on Highway S22.
Pictured above you can see all the solar panels. Janie said only one lady there runs a generator from time to time, otherwise it’s very quiet and everyone is running off of solar. They get fresh water and dump at the state park and both Verizon and AT&T reception are great. Apparently this group of campers are quite social, but just up the road a bit more is some more dispersed camping for those who want a little more privacy.
Cell reception wasn’t as good there, so we’re planning on joining the Pegleggers next January.
