Candlestick Rip Off Park

We were prepared for Candlestick RV Park to be an expensive parking lot. Their website says:

* Total vehicles length under 30′, 2 people $74
* Total vehicles length over 30′, 2 people $79

I was expecting it to be $74/night, I guess that language includes the tow vehicle. A little misleading, but fine. What was NOT fine with me, was when we checked in and the guy behind the counter says that it is $474 for 6 nights if I pay with cash or Travelers Checks. If I want to use my debit card it will be $525 and they don’t take checks. He doesn’t seem to care when I tell him they should have said something to me on the phone when I made my reservation. So I ask if there is an ATM nearby. He says there’s one outside. I asked how much is the fee? He said he didn’t know, the park doesn’t own it. Well, the fee is $6. I supposed we could have left and towed the trailer around the ghetto looking for a Bank of America, but we didn’t. I unhappily paid the $6 fee at their ATM vs. $51 dollar fee at the counter.

We are here for 3 nights instead of 6 and will be moving on Wednesday. We weren’t expecting it to be nice, but we also weren’t expecting to be ripped off.

    A 10% premium for using a debit card is indeed a rip-off. Their fees to handle a debit or credit card certainly aren’t any more than 4% (unless they’ve had a very bad history with the credit card companies).

    Besides, surcharging for use of a debit card in California is illegal. See

    You can report merchants who do this to the relevant credit card association and the card company will take action.

    Glad you called attention to Candlestick. They should be placed on some kind of Blacklist, which you’ve started. Send them a link to your post!
