In the Desert

January 6, 2013  |  California

The last few days have felt like we were packing for the apocalypse and for some reason it didn’t seem like we would be able to get it together yesterday to leave Los Angeles at a decent hour. We finally pulled out of Balboa RV at 1pm and had a 3 1/2 hour drive to Anza Borrego where arrived 30 minutes before sunset. Fortunately we were meeting up with Airstreamer friends who already had a spot scoped out for us which is perfectly level and gets GREAT cell reception!

Our goal this year is to do more boondocking, so I’d like to keep a running total of how much we’ve spent on camping. The last place we stayed, we paid the month rate of $725. We stayed 27 nights there, so if I prorate that for the first few days we were there in January, our total spent on camping this year is: $107.41. Out of curiosity I’m going to try and figure out what we spent for all of 2012, but that’s for another day. We’re going hiking.

  1. Anza Borrego! We were thinking of camping there on our way back to Santa Barbara from AlumaFiesta.

  2. Kier from Oregon

    Nice! Love the wide open space and amazing view! I know you give up convenience (easy shopping) but the peace and quiet would be so wonderful. Oh, and hiking before accounting is ALWAYS a better choice (-;

  3. So jealous! We had wanted to take our 22 Sport to Anza Borrego for New Years but I was worried it would be too cold at night boondocking. Do you have a generator? We are going to stay at Agua Caliente near Anza Borrego in Feb. Thanks!

    • Hi Cassie! We have 4 100 watt solar panels and are able to run the furnace all night and then use the computers all day. The Watson’s have 3 100 watt solar panels AND a generator, but haven’t had to use it. It is cold here at night. We met a 25 foot Airstream that didn’t have solar or a generator and they stayed for 2 nights, and said it got pretty cold inside, but had lots of blankets.
