Back to Fun

This past month we’ve been really neglecting ourselves. We’ve been working every night until 9:30 and I haven’t had time to cook so we’ve been eating a lot of frozen processed food. It’s taken a toll and yesterday we finally had 3 healthy meals and got outside.

Brian tried finding some hikes in the area, but there didn’t seem to be any good options. So I loaded up the geocaching app and discovered that we were surrounded by caches.

For those not familiar with geocaching, it’s basically a gps based “treasure” hunt. Where anyone can place a cache, which usually consists of a canister that varies in size. Inside the cache is a log you can sign and trinkets that others have left.

Our Geocaching history:
history
Geocaching has come a long way since we first started doing it in 2005. Back in the old days, we had to tether a gps device to a computer to download the coordinates. Today, there’s an app that has everything you need, even a compass. So yesterday I renewed our premium membership and our commitment to get outside. You can use the app for free, though not all caches are available for free users.

Yesterday, we went on 4 caches and only found 2 of them. We didn’t care that we didn’t find all 4, we just appreciated getting away from the computer screens and going places that we otherwise wouldn’t have gone.

Dinner Last Night:
I really miss having the time to cook and am renewing my commitment to that as well. Last night we had an old favorite: Veggie Soba Noodles. I like to make extra noodles and double the sauce so there’s leftovers for lunch the next day.

2016 Cost of Camping:
26 nights free camping
192 nights paid camping
218 days this year thru 8/6
Total spent on camping this year: $5588.58
Daily average cost of camping: $25.64

Welcome back to geocaching. You might want to look at Cachly (iPhone) or C:Geo (Android) – both are notably better than Geocaching.com’s app.
