Custom Airstream Curtains

The last time we hung out with Tiffani and Deke I coveted the custom black-out curtains in their Airstream. Tiffani offered to make some for us and we’re beyond happy with the result.

While we were hanging them, Brian suggested that Tiffani start a business producing custom Airstream curtains. She has the pattern and sizing for our two models, which turns out to be identical. What if she picked the fabric, and contracted out the work? I think there would be a demand, do you?

The trailer has an entirely different feel now. We love love love our new curtains. Thank you Tiffani!

Dinner Last Night:
I didn’t have anything planned because we haven’t gone to the grocery store yet. When I pulled everything I had out of the fridge it reminded me of a recipe that we had recently: Israeli Couscous Salad with Haloumi and Mint Vinaigrette. I made it without the cheese and with Great Northern Beans. Tiffani, Brian and I polished off the entire batch.

I would hire Tiffani to do our curtains in a heartbeat. I am getting tired of the boring white factory curtains in my Airstream. Yours look great.

The curtains look great! And yes, she should start a business 🙂

Thanks everyone! It’s really hard to make curtains for someone else, but I’m really happy with the results. If anyone is seriously interested, email me and maybe we can talk about it. I’m not sold on doing it again, but maybe! Also, you should talk to Leigh separately about the expense of the fabric and blackout fabric!

Thanks Leigh and Brian for trusting me with your curtains!

Hi Tiffany, we just bought our first used airstream, a 1994 excella with those ugly pinch-pleated cream coloured drapes. I love the smoothness of the ones you made. What hardware did you use bottom and top? I sew, and I am thinking of tackling the project. I want to tart up the interior from old-folks stuffy to modern/spectacular!

This is the vibe we’re faced with now. Any suggestions would be very much appreciated!

Oh my goodness I adore the new curtains! We are taking our sewing machine on the road with us when we leave so that I can learn how to tackle such kinds of projects. Love your blog and reading your travel stories, will definitely be a regular around here! 🙂

In the “I was there”files (for the terrifying first cutting of this fabric), I have to say that Tiff, you’re amazing. I’m also a beneficiary of your mad-curtain-skillz and think of you every morning as I unveil my backyard. Bravo on your finished product!

I am going to try and make some black out curtains to fit into the windows behind our wooden blinds we put up….Tiffany is so talented and cute….love the look…

They look great. Having blackout curtains sounds awesome. Especially after being woken up at 5am this past weekend. Can you make some that also block out the sound of slamming car doors?

    • Reply Leigh July 15, 2013 at 10:58 am

Wouldn’t that be great? If that were possible I’d like to also request that they block out campfire smoke. 🙂

I also made front curtains for our Airstream. But I had to make them twice because I didn’t realize the first time that the curtains are NOT a rectangle. They are wider at the bottom than the top.

My husband also made a blackout for the fantastic fan in our bedroom. He built a frame around the fan and then a thin piece of something, not sure what but it was firm and slides easily, that slipped into the frame and keeps it dark in the morning. Anyone have any ideas about how to blackout the windows that have the mini blinds on them?

    • Reply Leigh July 6, 2014 at 9:28 am

Hi Terri, we swapped out the mini blinds for the oceanair blinds that come standard in the International. They have a pretty good black-out effect. I’m not sure about replacing them after you’ve had mini-blinds, though I’ve heard people talk about wanting to do it.
