Las Cienegas National Conservation Area

Hiding out in the Desert

Last week we spent camping in Las Cienegas National Conservation Area. I had a feeling it was going to be a bit busy due to the number of posts I had seen on Instagram recently and the number of reviews coming in on Campendium.

First we tried Cieneguita Camping Area, but all the spots were taken, so we ended up at Maternity Well Group Site (pictured).

Anyone can camp at the group sites until a permitted group shows up and BLM permits are only required for groups over 29 people (there was only 14 in ours).

Mid-week a group with a permit showed up forcing us to move to the nearby Airstrip Group Site. This time we called to make sure no groups were expected for the rest of our stay.

Conversations these days always come back to the virus. I’m grateful for the internet keeping us all connected and informed. Hopefully, we can all limit how often we go out for supplies and do our part to prevent this from spreading.

Brian and I are now gargling up to 3x daily and I’ve found that it has helped greatly in keeping a pestering winter cold from taking hold. See: Prevention of upper respiratory tract infections by gargling: a randomized trial.
