On Sunday we left Slab City and went back to Anza Borrego State Park, but this time to higher ground. The past few weeks in the desert have been pretty hot so this week (and maybe next) we’ll be in Blair Valley.
The dirt road to our spot is pretty bumpy and uneven so we had to take it slow coming in. At one point our spare tire (which is under the the trailer) got stuck because there wasn’t a lot of clearance at the angle we came in at. So Brian had to back out a little and angle us down the road a little differently and we were able to pass.
There are a few other motorhomes and RV’s here, but everyone is quite far apart.
Cell service is better the farther down the dirt road you go. AT&T is great, 5 bars of 4G. Verizon is totally weird. We have between 4 and 5 bars of 4G Verizon but no voice! Just data. We checked to make sure the phone is working in the nearby town of Julian, it just won’t place or receive calls here.
This is the view from our front door.
Out of curiosity, I looked up the elevation of our last two locations:
Clark Dry Lake: 668 feet
Slab City: 69 feet
Blair Valley: 2,543 feet

Dinner Last Night:
Mushroom Hot Pot. I’ve made this before and blogged about it. Our friend Bert commented on that post, so last night we drove to Borrego Springs to see him and Janie and brought it for dinner.
2013 Cost of Camping:
16 nights paid camping
77 nights free camping
Total spent on camping this year: $495.75
Daily average cost of camping: $5.33

That’s quite a change in elevation! Looks like a nice, secluded spot. Stay cool 🙂
We are having so much trouble with cell and data….driving this person nuts! I have found one spot on our dining table that we have cell and data service. Go figure! BTW….we found a Rattlesnake last night…away….far away from your site!
i’m having a Lot of Trouble accepting that there is a real place called “Slab City”…is SO post-apocalyptic…”
I agree with Rich….several years ago we saw a film festival piece about living off the grid….may have been Slab City….I would be afraid to be out there….of course, there are desperate souls everywhere….probably higher concentration at Slab…
