RV Camping in Asheville, NC

I have our itinerary mapped out pretty far in advance, and we currently have reservations through this coming April. That means I’m booking campsites up to a year in advance depending on the booking window for a particular location. Florida state parks are 11 months in advance, Michigan was 6 months. So I actually was booking Florida and Michigan at the same time while we were camping in Texas.

For private parks, I’ve found that 6 months in advance is usually safe, however, I learned that is not the case for the peak Fall foliage season in Asheville, North Carolina.

Six months ago I tried to get us into Mama Gertie’s and Campfire Lodgings. Neither had availability for 2 weeks in October.

Lake Powhatan wasn’t really because we need strong cell service, so we ended up at Wilson’s Riverfront RV Park located right in Asheville. After 4 nights on the hillside, we scored a river site, and even though the park is pretty cramped and very noisy, we really appreciated the central location.

Brian scouted another option north of Asheville that we hadn’t considered. He said access is a little tricky but French Broad River Campground has a similar layout to Wilson’s, is a lot quieter, and the river sites look even nicer than what we had the past 2 weeks.

2016 Cost of Camping:
26 nights free camping
275 nights paid camping
301 days this year thru 10/29
Total spent on camping this year: $7890.14
Daily average cost of camping: $26.21

Love how you broke down the daily cost of camping, when you put it like that it really seems reasonable for anyone to be able to go camping!

Love Wilson’s. An Uber is what, 5 – 15 minutes from anywhere in Asheville, and for us the big park right next door was hours of fun for the kids with the cycling track and awesome playground.

This is really amazing. You must be very neat and organized. Booking campsites a year in advance? And you manage your daily cost. Wow. Me and my wife don’t know where we’ll park tomorrow. But it does not matter. What’s important is that life is good when you’ve AirStream RV. Yes..

Hi! Yeah, a year in advance is a bit nuts. We prefer boondocking in the west where it’s a lot more flexible, but when you want to go to really popular reservation only locations, we’re forced to comply! 🙂
