Dog Anxiety

Curtie’s at a stage in life where if it isn’t one thing, it’s something else.

His urinary incontinence is currently under control, we’re getting him to eat by adding tuna or eggs to his kibble, and his walking is ok, but not great.

His current issue is anxiety. The sound of high winds freaks the old guy out so much that he won’t stop panting until the wind stops – and it’s been windy every day this week.

Monday after a few hours of panting, I finally googled “dog anxiety” and found the usual recommendations for a thunder shirt. I don’t want to use the thunder shirt because the pressure from his belly band actually caused him to pee!

Then I found Through A Dog’s Ear, tried a sample and the panting instantly stopped! It’s simple classical piano music, and something about the tones and the tempo relaxes dogs.

We’ve been listening to a “Through A Dog’s Ear” playlist on Spotify for the past 2 days. It’s not their official music, it’s quite similar and it seems to do the trick!

Dinner Last Night:
Dinner the night before last was more interesting than our kale and beet salad last night. On Tuesday we had a tofu (made really freaking delicious) with bok choy, red peppers and everything sauce over rice. I’m not a big tofu fan, but I LOVE it prepared this way.

Check out the: tofu/soy scorecard.

I love the music “Through A Dog’s Ear”. So glad it is helping Curtie to relax a little. We went through that with our 17 yr old Pom in her last years. I know it is stressful for the both of you also. Please give him a hug for me. Love this boy even if we have never met.

Hey gang — So I tried this with Lucy tonight and it was amazing. With howling winds and a bit of thunder she was shaking and panting — to the extreme. I put this on and sat the computer in the room with her while she was hiding and within 30 min or so she was just lying down calmly. WOW. Thank you so much for turning us on to this!

Yes, we too use Through A Dog’s Ear. We actually have the player that works with different programs that you can buy or download. Looks like a camera card. You can power it by usb.it small and easy to put where the dog is.
Another thing I wanted to mention that sometimes helps instead of a thunder shirt is a shirt worn by either one of you.put it on Curtie(not a clean one!)and with a safety clip make it fit on his back. Some dogs calm down in a shirt of their owner or mom.

Thanks Karen. That’s a good idea. Curtie used to use Rescue Remedy when he was going to dog school! He was freaked out by all the dogs. I’m not sure how well it worked for him, but we got through it!
