The only way to access the snorkeling at Cook Monument is to rent kayaks, charter a boat or hike a mile from the parking lot. Since we rented kayaks, we were lucky enough to visit with a pod of dolphins on the way there.
I can’t even explain how amazing this was. I took a couple photos (which don’t do the experience justice), then secured my phone back in the dry bag, jumped in the water and tethered myself to the kayak (so it wouldn’t float away). Underwater we could see dolphins riding each other upside down, swimming down deep, then shooting themselves up and out of the water, spinning in the air and plunging back down.
After the dolphin show, we went up to the monument where we saw yellow tang, parrotfish, black durgeon and black seach urchins. I can’t wait for our next snorkeling adventure.
Our apartment for the week is a quirky little place with cinder block walls, a murphy bed and a fantastic view.
